Tiburon Consulting: HBM3 Initially Supplied by SK Hynix, Samsung Shares Rapidly Rise After AMD Verif

TrendForce highlights the current landscape of the HBM market, which as of early 2024 is focused on HBM3 . NVIDIA's upcoming B100 or H200 models will feature advanced HBM3e, marking the next step in memory technology. The challenge, however, is the supply bottleneck caused by CoWoS packaging constraints and HBM's inherently long production cycle - extending the time from wafer start to final product by more than two quarters.

Current HBM3 supply for NVIDIA H100 solutions is primarily met by SK Hynix, resulting in insufficient supply to meet emerging AI market demand. Samsung's entry into NVIDIA's supply chain with its 1Znm HBM3 product at the end of 2023 marks a breakthrough in this area, albeit on a smaller initial scale.

Samsung continued to move forward by securing the AMD MI300 series for its HBM3 products in the 2024 quarter, reinforcing its position as a key supplier to AMD. This milestone paves the way for Samsung to increase its HBM3 production distribution beginning in the 2024 quarter. It is worth noting that Micron has yet to enter the HBM supply market, with SK Hynix and Samsung being the major players. Samsung, in particular, is expected to gain market share quickly as distribution of AMD's MI300 series expands over the next few quarters.

Starting in 2024, the market focus will shift from HBM3 to HBM3e, with production expected to ramp up gradually in the second half of the year, and HBM3e will become the new mainstream of the HBM market.TrendForce reports that SK Hynix led the quarterly HBM3e validation, followed by Micron, which plans to start distributing its HBM3e products by the end of the quarter, which is in line with NVIDIA's plan to deploy H200 by the end of the Second Quarter.

Samsung is slightly behind in sample submissions and expects to complete HBM3e validation by the end of the quarter and begin shipping in the second quarter. As Samsung has made significant progress with HBM3 and its HBM3e validation is expected to be completed soon, the company is expected to significantly close the market share gap with SK Hynix by the end of the year, reshaping the competitive landscape in the HBM market.
